When the MTV Video Music Awards established Best K-Pop in 2019 in recognition of the genre’s growing worldwide prominence, it may as well have been called the BTS Award since that boy band won it three years running. But last year they lost for the first time, and now they’re on hiatus so they’re not even nominated. Who will win in their place?
As of this writing Blackpink are the favorites for their video “Pink Venom.” According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, the girl group gets leading odds of 11/2. Among the VMA pundits backing them for the win are 17 of our Top 24 Users who got the highest scores predicting last year’s winners and 20 of our All-Star Top 24 who got the highest scores when you combine the last two years’ prediction results.
The quartet certainly have history on their side. Last year the artist who beat BTS was actually Blackpink member Lisa for her solo video “Lalisa.” Blackpink also won Song of Summer in 2020 for “How You Like That,” and they beat BTS for Best Metaverse Performance in 2022. So even if BTS were still around there would be a strong case to be made for Blackpink to prevail anyway. What’s more, “Pink Venom” was a crossover hit that peaked at number-22 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, further demonstrating their popularity.
But it’s not an open-and-shut case for Blackpink. Ranked second in our odds with support from two Top Users and two All-Stars are Stray Kids for “S-Class.” They have only been nominated once before at the VMAs, but in the past two years they have already achieved three number-one albums on the Billboard 200. And the fan-voted VMAs are a popularity contest after all, so don’t count them out.
Rounding out our top three with support from two Top Users and one All-Star are Fifty Fifty for “Cupid”; that song is arguably the biggest hit in the category having peaked at number-17 on the Hot 100. So this looks like a robust race even without BTS in the mix.
