A new name has emerged in the K-pop space, and it’s an exciting band that is wasting no time in making themselves known. Now, just days after releasing their first proper single, the group has hit the Billboard charts, starting what may be the beginning of a fruitful career.
Babymonster arrives on a traditional Billboard chart for the first time this week. The girl group’s debut single “Batter Up” launches at No. 5 on the World Digital Song Sales chart.
This week, “Batter Up” is the only debut on the World Digital Song Sales chart. The tune manages to break onto the 10-spot list of the best-selling “world” tunes in the U.S. It comes in just ahead of non-mover “Lalalala” by Stray Kids, which ruled the tally not long ago.
While “Batter Up” may mark Babymonster’s first appearance on a Billboard chart that’s compiled using traditional methods–including sales, streams, and airplay consumption, that is–it isn’t actually their first tune to appear on any list published by the company. The band released a YouTube-exclusive track titled “Dream” in May, and that cut reached the Hot Trending Songs chart earlier this year, rising to the summit on the now-defunct ranking of the most-discussed titles on Twitter.
Babymonster is the latest K-pop girl group from a titan in the genre, YG Entertainment. The record label has produced some of the most successful all-female vocal acts in that field, including 2NE1 and Blackpink, who just recently renewed their contract with the company.
Neither Babymonster nor YG Entertainment has yet announced what’s next for the girl group, but it’s likely that more music is coming soon. The band’s ability to debut their first single on a Billboard chart immediately as it was made available shows that interest in the act is strong, especially among American consumers, and the future looks bright for the seven women who make up the outfit.
