BTS’ V is facing backlash from fans for wearing a durag during his recent live broadcast on Weverse Live. The livestream took place on October 9, after V attended an after-party for Lil Uzi Vert in Seoul. During the broadcast, V showed fans a red durag that was hanging on a keyboard stand behind him, and he decided to put it on to show them what it was. After wearing it for about 20 seconds, he took it off. The identity of the person who gave him the durag remains unknown, but fans have noted that it has been spotted in previous live broadcasts by the singer.
Durags were initially worn by slaves in the 19th century to keep their hair out of their face. In the 1970s, they became popular among Black men to protect and maintain their hairstyles while sleeping. In the ’90s, durags became a style item popularized by artists in the hip-hop community.
Since the live broadcast, fans have had mixed reactions to V wearing the durag. Some criticize him for appropriating black culture and perpetuating stereotypes, while others defend him, stating that anyone can wear a durag and it shouldn’t be seen as offensive. V has previously collaborated with black artists and has been involved in genres created by black people during his decade-long career.
