Pillango Productions EXCLUSIVE: Canadian prodcos Pillango Productions and Aircraft Pictures have recently completed Gangnam Project, a new tween dramedy series centered around the world of K-pop. The series, consisting of 10 episodes, was filmed in Toronto and South Korea and tells a coming-of-age story inspired by the personal journey of Pillango Productions producer Sarah Haasz. Gangnam Project is set in Korea and follows the story of Hannah Shin, a spirited Canadian/Korean teenager who aspires to become a K-pop star and reconnect with her Korean heritage. After accepting a job as an English tutor at a prestigious K-pop training school in South Korea, Hannah discovers that there’s more to the experience than she initially anticipated. She is tasked with tutoring one of the school’s most challenging students, Chan-Mi. In an effort to win over the students, Hannah showcases her talent through impromptu performances, which catches the attention of the school’s owner and leads to an opportunity for her to become a student as well. The series, developed with CBC Kids and produced by Pillango Productions and Aircraft Pictures, features Haasz and Romeo Candido as the co-showrunners. The production is financially supported by Shaw Rocket Fund and the Canada Media Fund. Federation Kids & Family will handle worldwide sales and present the series at the upcoming Mipcom and Mipjunior markets. The series also features an original soundtrack composed by August Rigo, a recording artist, songwriter, producer, and musician who has written songs for renowned K-pop group BTS, Justin Bieber, and One Direction. Haasz expressed her joy in finally bringing her dream of telling her first-generation immigrant story to life in Gangnam Project. The Co-Founders of Aircraft Pictures, Anthony Leo and Andrew Rosen, praised Haasz’s personal story for adding authenticity to the project and commended her and Romeo for their passion and creativity. Marie McCann, Senior Director of Children’s Content at CBC Kids, described Gangnam Project as an exciting and relatable teen drama set in the world of K-pop, perfect for their audience.
